The ocean covers over 70% of Earth’s surface and plays a vital role in shaping our weather, climate, and the conditions that support life. This course introduces students to how the ocean and atmosphere interact to regulate Earth’s environment and influence everything from hurricanes to the air we breathe. We will explore topics such as ocean circulation, the carbon cycle, marine life and ecosystems, and human impacts including pollution and climate change. Students will use real-world data and visual tools to understand how the ocean connects to global systems — and why understanding it is essential for addressing today’s environmental challenges. Designed for students from all backgrounds, this course emphasizes scientific literacy, critical thinking, and the relevance of ocean and climate science to everyday life and sustainability.
