Ideas That Matter introduces students to the liberal arts as a foundation for academic success, civic engagement, and career readiness while explicitly teaching how to succeed as a college student. The course emphasizes the habits, skills, and mindsets essential for academic, career, and personal success. Through interdisciplinary inquiry across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences students will develop core skills: critical thinking, communication, information literacy, collaboration, ethical reasoning, and self management skills. Students will learn not only what they will learn in college, but how college learning works—how to manage time, engage with faculty, seek help, evaluate information, and apply learning beyond the classroom. The course connects liberal arts skills to real world problems, professional pathways, and lifelong learning.
