Reading II: Classroom Reading Assessment

Reading II is a foundational literacy course designed to prepare preservice teachers to understand and apply evidence-based, structured literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading for students in grades K–2. The course emphasizes major theoretical models of reading development, including the Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s Reading Rope, Ehri’s Phases, and the Four-Part Processing Model, while building practical knowledge of concepts of print, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling/encoding, morphology, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Candidates will learn to administer and interpret literacy assessments to guide instruction for diverse learners and will complete the Impact on Student Reading Intervention Project (ISRIP), which includes ten tutoring sessions with a K–2 student using assessment-driven lesson planning and reflection. This course also supports preparation for the Foundations of Reading licensure exam through applied coursework and skill-based practice. Prerequisite: READ 30903
