Burned and Banned Literature

Catalog description

In this course students will examine the history of when and why various texts have become “forbidden content” for the public. Students will look at the cultural impact of censorship on intellectual freedom and privacy issues by reading/watching/listening to various genres from the classics, popular culture, and even from the “innocent” realms of children’s literature. This course will explore issues concerning copyright, intellectual freedom, information access and more—issues that affect a student’s personal privacy, civil rights and ability to participate in today’s information-rich society.
