Catalog description

This course provides students with a stimulating range of English literary texts from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century. The main literary figures and movements will be placed within an historical and social context and, when possible, the understanding of literature will be enhanced by the students’ field trips. The module will not only trace the chronology of literary developments, but will also (where possible) assist students to discover a sense of the geography or settings for the literature studied which will naturally be extended through the field trips. The lectures, seminars, and assignments aim to foster a spirit of enquiry and analysis, and to develop a critical response to literature, introducing basic critical terminology and critical theory. Literature from multiple genres (drama, poetry and fiction) will be studied.
