Understanding Fiction

Catalog description

This course examines the history and development of Fiction as a genre. The course aims to give students an understanding of the issues surrounding the production of literature in its period; why it developed the way in which it did; and how it is an aesthetic response to the social, political and economic forces that brought it into existence. Students will read and discuss works of fiction from a variety of authors and periods, with the aim of providing competence in critical judgment and analysis, knowledge of formal characteristics, and appreciation of literary excellence.
