The First World War represents a turning point in world history. The conflict eroded empires, shattered the international order, unleashed the deadly potential of modern economies and technologies, and propelled sweeping social change. This course analyzes the causes, course, and consequence of the Great War. It focuses on military and diplomatic developments and on the social, economic, and technological aspect of the war. We will explore these aspects of the conflict and its legacy through lectures, regular discussions, secondary readings, and through the analysis of primary documents.
