What is "religion" and why should we study it? In what ways does religion influence individuals and societies, and how, in turn, is it shaped by them? This course, which serves as an introduction to religious studies, addresses these and other questions through case studies drawn from the traditions that originated in India (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism). Using a wide range of sources, we will explore multiple dimensions of religion, such as the narrative, philosophical, ritual, experiential, and social. Prerequisite: First or second year standing. T.
