Advanced Studies in the History of Philosophy: Origins of the Analytic / Continental Divide: Descending from a common origin in European academic philosophy, "Analytic" and "Continental" philosophy are close cousins who have sometimes waged a kind of family feud. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they parted ways and developed distinct styles, agendas, and methods. Their recent and contemporary descendants sometimes define themselves in opposition to one another. In this seminar we will investigate the historical, conceptual, and institutional relations between these philosophical clans, and assess their self-understandings. Readings will include works by Frege, Husserl, Heidegger, Carnap, Sellars, and others. Prerequisites: PHI-233 or 234.
