Topics in Sonic Creativity: Sounds of Collective Motion. From cultural parades and festivals to social movements and interactive sound art, collective action activates human creativity using dynamic modes of embodiment. In this course, students will study how collective motion around the world fosters community affirmation, social commotion, and multi-media epistemic justice. By creating sonic works through the moving of bodies together, students will critique ideological frameworks of oppression, partake in adapting traditions, and contextualize networks of cosmological noise that bind communities together. This course includes music making, festival organization, and parade participation in favor of a localized aesthetic of communal composition and an academic inquiry of cultural noise making. Prerequisite: MUS-100 or second-year standing.
