Functions and Math Models

Catalog description

Mathematics is a fundamental tool for modeling phenomena encountered in the natural and social sciences. The course begins with a study of the types of functions used for such models -- linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric. What is learned about functions is then applied to topics in modeling, such as linear regression, difference equations, mixed models, the logistic equation, and probability. Prerequisite: None. Open to first-year students only.
