LIN 114Intro to General Linguistics

Catalog

What is language and how is it studied scientifically? This survey course introduces the core subfields of linguistics - phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics - and how these areas integrate with one another in the study of language and society, language acquisition, language technologies, and language change. Our goal is to determine what it means to 'know' a language and to examine how language is acquired, produced, and processed, and with what social effects. Prerequisite: None. STAFF.
