Advancd Special Topic: World War I in Palestine: Cultural and Military History. The First World War is rightly considered as a most transformative moment in the history of Palestine and the broader Middle East. Yet, despite being a major front for almost two years, most histories of the First World War pay little attention to the military operations and cultural dimensions which played out in what would be transformed from a province of the Ottoman Empire to a mandate of British colonial rule. The course will work to address this gap in WWI historiography in two parts. First, the course will offer a detailed study of the military operations which unfolded in Palestine's geography between local forces (Zionist and Arab), the Ottomans, and the British. Second, the course will examine how the WWI campaign in Palestine was imagined, represented, and remembered by different actors and groups. This will not serve as seminar credit for the history major. Prerequisite: HIS-100 or second-year standing.
