Craft Histories

Catalog description

This course explores questions about how we make meaning through craft. How have craftspeople grappled with the social and political problems of their times? In what ways has crafting served as an alternative archive, as a tool for resistance, community, ritual, privilege, or appropriation? How has craft articulated identities and challenged normative paradigms? Together we examine case studies across the globe and pieces in clay, textiles, and wood. Students work on individual crafting and complete small-scale research projects. Dates: Fall section 01 August 31 to October 15. Spring section 01 January 25 to March 10. Prerequisite: HIS-100 or second-year standing.
