The Empire Writes Back: Intro to Postcolonial Studies. In the first wave of postcolonial literatures, writers from countries and cultures colonized by Britain rewrote and reimagined canonical English literary texts. This critical relation to the canon inaugurated a new literary sensibility that explores concepts such as 'multiple englishes,' 'home,' migration, and new postcolonial histories.  In later developments, Anglophone fiction came to describe not only a new literary and cultural tradition, but also the possibilities of postcolonial futures. Readings for the course include literary works from Asia, African and the Caribbean such as Chinua Achebe's classic Things Fall Apart, Aime Cesaire's A Tempest, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, NoViolet Bulawayo's We Need New Names, Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy, Salman Rushdie's, East, West, and The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh. Prerequisite: English 120 or English 121 for majors; for non-majors, English 120 or 121 or third-year standing. KAPILA.
