Catalog description

This course explores the development of oral and written language in early childhood (birth through age 8) with an emphasis on linguistic principles, first and second language acquisition, and multilingual literacy development. Candidates will examine the structure of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) and its role in cognitive, social, and cultural development. Strategies for supporting language learning among diverse learners, including English learners (ELLs), will be integrated throughout. This course meets ESL endorsement requirements.
