Neuropsychopharmacology

Catalog description

Neuropsychopharmacology is a critical course for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student. Principles of neuropsychopharmacology including neurobiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, indications for use, mechanisms of action, common side effects, adverse reactions, and safety issues of psychiatric drugs are examined. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, cholinesterase inhibitors, hypnotics, mood stabilizers, and stimulants are discussed. Algorithms are presented in understanding best evidence-based pharmacological interventions. Regulatory legalities of the prescriptive role are explored. Students will demonstrate advanced practice levels of clinical judgment, critical thinking, and accountability in evaluating evidence-based neuropsychopharmacology interventions to improve patient outcomes across the life span. Students will analyze ethical and legal ramifications around prescribing psychiatric medications across the life span with special populations and high-risk patients
