Catalog description

This course provides an introduction to the theories, principles, concepts and techniques of crisis theory and practice carried out in a variety of human service environments. The range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses of those experiencing crises will be explored. Effective crisis management is explored to learn how people feel, think, and behave during periods of crisis, and what strategies and resources are available to them. Specific types of crises are reviewed (e.g. developmental, crises of abuse, trauma, grief and loss) and the student will learn typical intervention strategies for various crisis situations. Finally, the student will learn about professional challenges associated with conducting crisis intervention work and issues such as compassion, fatigue and stress management. Prerequisite: HSR 101.
