Social History of the American

This course will dismantle the myths that women were passive bystanders to American history and made only insignificant contributions to society. It explores how diverse groups of women shaped the nation's culture, institutions, and identity from pre-Columbian times through the present. Students will discover how centering women's experiences in American history reconceptualizes dominant narratives about power, progress, and belonging. Students will develop skills in interpreting firsthand accounts and evaluating bias and perspective in sources. The course applies an intersectional framework to understand how race, class, gender, and sexuality have profoundly influenced women's lived experiences and historical agency.
