History of Medicine

Catalog description

This course examines the development of medical theory and practice from ancient times to the present day, with particular emphasis on how medicine has reflected social hierarchies, influenced political movements, and responded to public health crises. Students will investigate historic and contemporary issues including the roots of early medicine, the impact of plagues and pandemics on society, racial disparities in healthcare, and ongoing conversations about healthcare access and practices. This course will emphasize critical thinking skills to evaluate how historical patterns of medical practice continue to influence present-day healthcare.
