Hip Hop, Society, and Culture

Catalog description

“Hip hop” is a term for the art, music, dance, literature, identity, style, and politics stemming from the boroughs of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s. In this course, students will critically examine various components of hip hop and how they have impacted fashion, business, politics, and culture. Students will explore the relationship between these elements and society through the medium of hip hop. Students will trace the historical development of hip hop and investigate the power dynamics between hip hop practitioners and the wants and needs of corporate interests. Prerequisite: ENG 176
