Juvenile Corrections and Rehabilitation

Catalog description

This course provides an in-depth examination of juvenile corrections, with a focus on rehabilitation, treatment, and prevention of reoffending among youth. Students analyze the structure and operation of juvenile detention facilities, probation, and community-based correctional programs, while exploring the legal, ethical, and developmental considerations unique to juvenile populations. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practices such as restorative justice, educational and vocational programming, counseling, and family-centered interventions. The course also examines the impact of trauma, mental health, substance abuse, and social factors on juvenile delinquency and correctional outcomes. Through case studies and policy analysis, students evaluate contemporary challenges and reforms in juvenile corrections. Prerequisites: CRJ 303 and CRJ 399 with a “C” or better.
