The efforts of the Irish to gain autonomy, and later, independence from Britain have fired the imagination of the Irish diaspora, European nationalists, and freedom fighters around the world. In this class, we will look the “Irish Freedom Struggle” from the Tudor conquest of Ireland until the present, but we will focus on the “long nineteenth century” and the Irish Revolutionary Period of the early 1900s. We will look at Grattan’s Parliament, the Uprising of 1798, Catholic Emancipation, the Great Famine, the push for Home Rule, Ulster separatism, World War I, and the Irish Revolution and Civil War as key moments in the changing relationship between Ireland and Britain.
