Concepts and Best Practices for Teaching Reading with Practicum

Catalog description

Candidates will explore the reading workshop models for delivering literacy instruction, as well as the role of specific strategies in developing phonological and phonemic awareness and proficiency, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary in first- and second-language learners. Literature for prekindergarten through Grade 5 readers in a variety of formats and genres are integrated throughout the course. Candidates will develop the background needed to develop a comprehensive reading instruction curriculum for first- and second-language learners that builds upon the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and needs of prekindergarten through Grade 5 readers. This course also includes practicum in a school setting, under the supervision of a qualified classroom teacher and college faculty. Candidates will plan and implement reading lessons and conferences. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate professionalism, and effective use of instructional strategies, as well as provision of a positive and academically challenging learning environment for all students.
