Catalog description

The course will emphasize the nature and skills of science as well as the understanding of major science concepts and principles in these fields. The use of an inquiry based approach throughout the course will enhance the application of these concepts to the teaching of elementary and middle grades students. Upon completion of the course, students will: 1) Demonstrate scientific method and the process of scientific inquiry; 2) Describe the organization of life from the cellular level to the ecosystem; 3) Understand how organisms interact with their environment; 4) Understand the geological processes that shape the earth and their impact on the biosphere; 5) Demonstrate understanding of the components of the solar system; 6) Communicate effectively regarding scientific topics in oral and written form using appropriate scientific terminology; 7) Apply scientific concepts covered in the course to global issues and perspectives including newsworthy scientific stories.
