Catalog description

Principles of biochemistry, inorganic and coordination chemistry are used to explore the role and mechanism of essential and non-essential metals in the function and behavior of biomolecules, especially metalloproteinase. Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1) describe connections between inorganic chemistry and the life processes in written and oral form, 2) apply the principles of coordination chemistry and electron count of transition metals to the properties and processes of metalloproteinase, 3) describe the properties, stability, reactivity and bonding theories of coordination compounds in relationship to living systems, 4) identify and describe the experimental methods used in bioinorganic chemistry and employ the principles of inorganic chemistry to predict and critically analyze spectroscopic data of metalloproteinase, and 5) illustrate and interpret scientific data in one or more advanced topics involving the role of metalloproteinase in catalysis, respiration, metabolism, medicine, and ion transport.
