BIOL 2370 , CHEM 1212K Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: (1) Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamentals of microbiology including history, microscopy and staining techniques and characteristics and evolution of microorganisms; (2) Demonstrate knowledge of genetics including inheritance of information, causes, consequences, and uses of mutations, exchange and acquisition of genetic information in prokaryotes; (3) Describe and discuss metabolism, growth, growth control and metabolic diversity in prokaryotes; (4) Describe the spectrum of chemotherapeutic antimicrobial activity, selective toxicity and how it leads to antibiotic resistance; (5) Explain the interaction and impact microorganisms and hosts (to include pathology and epidemiology) and the role of microorganism in the environment; (6) Describe the general concepts of acellular microbes (prions, viroids, and viruses) and their role in microbiology; and (7) Demonstrate proficiency in basic lab skills and communicate the results of experiments effectively
