Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the basic principles of archaeological fieldwork, including site detection, excavations, and preliminary artifact analyses. This course also explores the rise of cities and complex stratified societies in diverse global contexts, examining the commonalities and differences in ancient civilizations and challenging popular myths and misconceptions about these societies and their cultures and accomplishments.
