Introduces the field of systems and industrial engineering. Introduces both large and small systems, industrial engineering principles, processes, and explains them through hands-on experiences. Key concepts include understanding requirements for the system, processes, and translation of system-level requirements to component-level requirements. Several kinds of example systems and processes are presented and discussed: objectives, major components, how systems work, and major design issues. Each student gives a presentation on a system of choice. Students work in groups to design, develop, and test simple systems by building a prototype of the system, and give an oral presentation.
