Catalog description

Introduces students to a sociological exploration of the individual and society. The course is organized around several major themes, including the study of the individual within social context, the process the individual uses to narrate his/her self- and social identities, and how the individual manages, protects, and solidifies his/her self-identity and negotiates the boundaries of self within the context of everyday social interactions. The course also examines how daily social interactions shape the understanding of self and experiences of the individual. In conclusion, the course presents a consideration of how identity projects are mediated by and formed within larger structures of constraint. Offered by Sociology & Anthropology .
