Seminar on dissertation research methods and scholarly writing for doctoral students in Systems Engineering and Operations Research. The course prepares students to transition from coursework to independent dissertation research by integrating research design, hypothesis formulation, evidence-based reasoning, and scholarly writing. Topics include literature review and synthesis, formulation of research questions and hypotheses, selection and justification of research methodologies, construction of defensible arguments, and development of a realistic dissertation research plan. The course also introduces modern research workflows, including responsible and ethical use of AI-assisted tools for literature exploration, drafting, and revision, with emphasis on verification, transparency, and academic integrity. The seminar is intended to be taken early in the PhD program, prior to the dissertation proposal. Offered by Systems Engr & Operations Rsch . May not be repeated for credit. Equivalent to SYST 763 .
