Catalog description
This course focuses on the physics of transport of mass, momentum, and energy in micro- and nanofluidic devices. At the core of the subject is fluid mechanics at the micrometer scale, where liquids behave quite differently than they do in our daily lives. These behaviors include pumping fluid with electricity and without moving parts (known as “electro-osmosis”), or flows that require no external driving force at all, but instead are driven by capillary action (the driving force behind paper microfluidics, a burgeoning subfield).
