Catalog description
This course covers various aspects of Virginia mental illness law. Class lectures, discussions, and assignments will cover the history of mental illness law, the involuntary commitment process in Virginia, how a mental illness diagnosis can affect constitutional rights, alternatives to involuntary commitment, guardianships/conservatorships, medication over objection orders, competency to stand trial, and civil commitment of sexually violent offenders. There is no textbook for this course. Assignments will include periodical articles, case law and law review articles.Offered by Law. May not be repeated for credit.
