Catalog description

This course allows students to explore the law that governs the use of outer space. This includes an understanding of the basic physics of space (including where space begins), the early history of human activity in space, and the key issues that propelled nations to enter into key outer space treaties. Students will learn to analyze whether treaty provisions are self-executing or require domestic legislation to become the force of law. From there, students will be introduced to the U.S. domestic law and regulatory agencies that regulate outer space activities. Students will explore such issues as the extraterritorial application of U.S. laws, the tragedy of the commons of orbital debris, and the role and limitations of military uses of outer space.Offered by Law.
