Examines history of crime, the development of criminal law, and how the criminal justice system developed in the US beginning in the mid-nineteenth century. Topics include changing ideas about illicit behavior, shifts in the scope, operation and limits of state power, and how social, economic, and political structures shaped the actions of individuals are explored by analyzing how newspapers reported offenses such as murder, assault, rape, theft, counterfeiting and arson.
