Catalog description
Previously relegated to more complex systems of systems, the seamless integration of hardware and software components to efficiently reach design goals is now ubiquitous to a wide spectrum of systems. However, awareness and understanding of the security implications of such integration are not advancing at the same pace of its adoption, including in critical applications. This course explores the factors leading to such knowledge gap by providing an overview of the life-cycle of cyber-physical systems (CPS) with an emphasis on the associated security implications. Topics covered include best practices and policies for secure CPS design, the role of standardization, embedded threat detection and analysis, resiliency, CPS modeling and simulation, vulnerability and risk-assessment of CPS, and others. CPS security research is also emphasized, with students being exposed to the latest advances in CPS security. The course includes a semester-long project on CPS security.
