Information technology (IT) increasingly plays a critical role in society, but the potential benefits of IT are often offset by unforeseen consequences and repercussions, such as algorithmic bias, privacy concerns, identity theft, and lack of transparency and safety. It is imperative therefore that future creators and designers of technology are equipped to both understand and address the societal impact of their work and be a productive member of the workforce. In this course students will learn about the role of IT in society through a historical introduction and subsequent focus on different domain applications. This course will provide a common baseline for all students in terms of an understanding of ethics and societal impact, which is essential since students come from diverse backgrounds with different life and work experiences.
