F Technology and Ethics

Catalog description

54 hours lecture per term. This course explores the relationships between emerging technologies and ethics. Students will practice ethical thinking and applying ethical thinking to the practical and theoretical aspects of new technology. This includes the moral issues that arise around the development and application of new technologies to social relationships and individual rights. The course will examine how to deal with existing ethical dilemmas and to anticipate those that may arise. Attention will be given to both contemporary and historical examples and may include such topics as: data management and usage, social media and virtual community, environmental sustainability, physical and mental health effects of technology, issues of truth and verification, health care technologies, machine learning and AI, and use of technology in conflict and surveillance.
