54 hours lecture per term. This course is the study of basic plant biology and the history and uses of plants and plant products by human societies. Plants that have played major roles in the molding of human society and civilization are studied. This course will also cover the changes made by human civilizations to plant morphology and physiology. Lectures are integrated with discussion, demonstration and hands-on learning activities. Specific topics include plant structure, function, origins of agriculture and domestication. Historical and contemporary uses of important plant products such as drugs, medicines, oils, resins, beverages, foods and industrial products are included.
