ENGR 1200
Design Nature
Franklin W Olin College of Engineering · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
We take nature, an important source of inspiration and understanding, as a theme and develop bio-inspired ideas into functional prototypes. Our focus is on the general principles and methods that shape the practice of engineering design. Students gain experience in sketch modeling, experimentation, estimation, fabrication, teaming, and presentation as they relate to designing through individual and team projects. We seek to develop a shared practice and understanding of engineering design while supporting students as they develop their engineering design identities. Throughout, we engage with sustainability by incorporating principles of biomimicry and taking environmental impact into account.
