Catalog description

In this project-based course, students study the design of historic and contemporary functional objects primarily made from wood and learn the skills to realize pieces of their own design. Over the course of the semester students will complete 3 to 5 projects, with earlier projects being more directed and shorter in duration, as well as sample parts. Projects early in the semester will focus on the use of hand tools and techniques for making precise parts, with later projects adding power equipment and techniques as well as more freedom in the scope and function of the works produced. Additionally, each student in the class will be responsible for a short research presentation. Class sessions will include a combination of lectures/presentations, demonstrations, peer review/feedback sessions, and work time.
