Catalog description
This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates with the foundational knowledge of applied linguistics so that they can effectively teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in K-12 settings. The course will provide teacher candidates with an overview of the history of U.S. language policy, legislation and The Florida Consent Decree. Teacher candidates will also study language principles, the structure of the English language, the nature of first (L1) and second (L2) language acquisition, major L1 and L2 acquisition theories, and effective strategies for promoting language development in K-12 settings. This course requires fifteen (15) hours of field experience in a K-12 classroom setting.
