Investigates the diverse cultural functions and critical definitions of graphic design across places and times prior to the twentieth century. Introduces broad stylistic movements common to western Europe and North America, and interrogates and re-writes received definitions of graphic design which exclude globally diverse artifacts, designers, practices, and users.
