Surveys a selection of classical approaches to the study of the body before analyzing and comparing several common literary, philosophical, medical (TCM), mantic, religious, and political representations of the human body in different eras of premodern Chinese culture. Tensions between traditionalism and modernity are examined in the final weeks of the course. All readings and discussion are in English.
