Complicates traditional center/periphery and insider/outsider dichotomies by examining both Roman depictions of "Barbarians" in text and image from the Republic through Late Antiquity, and Barbarian depictions of Romans. Examines art from monumental sculpture to small objects such as coins, paying particular attention to dress and its representation as a field of meaning.
