Catalog description

The course will examine issues of language and culture as relevant for teaching English learners (ELs) in K-12 schools. Students will develop a knowledge base in legislation and programs related to programs for ELs. Students will explore second language acquisition theories, stages of second language development, and linguistic components that will impact students’ performance. In this course, students will improve their cross-cultural understanding and communication to be prepared for meeting the educational needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students appropriately and to increase self-awareness of cultural biases. This course will also cover teaching methods, strategies and curriculum development activities that maximizes language and content learning for ELs. After becoming familiar with assessment for ELs, students will participate in the development of instructional materials and lessons aligned with state and national standards, and language acquisition principles.
