Introduction to Social Justice

Catalog description

The course is designed to explore the causes, consequences and solutions of social justice in American society. Its central focus will on one or more dimensions of human diversity on the basic of which systems, institutions, or practices that obstruct social justice in American society. The dimension may include, but are not limited to, race, gender, socioeconomic class, and sexual orientation. Students will be using the sociological perspectives to examine how race/ethnicity impact American Educational Experiences, how the Mass Media is used to shape ideas about racial groups, Economic Inequality, Health Inequality, how the law and society are connected, Immigration and Citizenship and lastly, and Undoing Racism. The course uses a social justice framework, it will consider constructive responses to such injustice. Lastly, they will also explore the consequences of these social issues and how policy might solve social inequality in the American society.
