EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - BASIC

Catalog description

This course prepares the student to provide pre-hospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations for working in the pre-hospital setting, and providing patient transportation. This course includes a total of 24-hours field experience in the ambulance and emergency department settings. One or more optional skills practice days may also be offered.  Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible to take the National Registry Exam required for certification as an EMT in the State of California. Advisory: Current certification in the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR) is required for this course. Students must also provide: (1) proof of vaccination for: MMR, varicella, Tdap, HepB, and seasonal flu, and (2) documentation of two negative TB skin tests (PPDs) in order to complete required clinical hours.
