Crisis Management and Emergency Preparedness

This course develops a managerial perspective on crisis management and emergency preparedness. Through case studies, the course examines distinctive challenges of dealing with different types of disasters; the communication problems that arise within the group of initial responders, NGOSs and between officials and the public-at-large; exemplary leadership and organizational strategies for responding to emergencies for which prior preparations may be inadequate or counterproductive. From a managerial perspective, the course aims to provide the skills and systems that must be deployed in times of crisis; considers how to set a course of action, mobilize and co­ordinate resources, and organize support; and teaches how organizations can effec­tively prepare in advance for crises. During this course students will complete FEMA certificate IS 800c- National Response Framework (NRF).
