Catalog description

The overarching aim of the course is to illustrate the uses of the computer in modern materials science and engineering, including modeling and simulation, data collection, and analysis. Computational methods will be used to illustrate various aspects of defect dynamics and microstructure evolution. The course objective is to create familiarity with state‐of‐the‐art methods to model and simulate materials and provide hands‐on experience with using these methods. A broad range of modeling techniques will be covered that span from atomistic: Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo, to continuum: Phase Field and Finite Element. Applications will be presented that utilize computational packages LAMMPS and VASP to study the structural, mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties of materials.
